Lessons of the lakes
Some things aren't taught in school.
Growing up in Michigan shapes one into a very unique design. Michiganders live closer to nature than most, and have an innate affinity for the water. We learn to be curious and explore the outdoors. We learn to deal with change and adversity across the four seasons. We learn to navigate the rough waters of life and enjoy the journey. Take a few moments to meet some of the Michigan kids that make up the Michigan Overboard family!
Jeff is a genuine Michigan journeyman, having spent time in just about every corner of the state. In the summer of 2016, he spent 3 weeks on his own, exploring the Upper Peninsula wilderness. A few months later, Jeff founded Michigan Overboard in an effort to give back to the place he cherishes so deeply. Recently, his pursuit of success as a Physical Therapist took him down to Durham, NC to attend school at Duke University. Despite the distance from home, Jeff still expresses his overboard attitude by hiking, water sports and spending time near the water with his friends and family.
Even though Derek was a stand out athlete throughout high school, he has always had an affinity for the arts, nature and creative expression. Specifically, music has always been an integral part of his life; occasionally even producing his own. After graduating from Grand Valley State University with a degree in Communications, Derek worked as an intern with the Detroit Tigers during the 2016 season while assisting with Michigan Overboard's inception. When he has time, Derek loves to express his overboard attitude through photography and spending time at the lake!

As an 18 year old, Nic runs two freelance businesses; photography and lawn mowing. Because those are two of his favorite things, it is as though he has never worked a day in his life. When he’s not cutting grass, you’ll usually find Nic skating, hammocking, and traveling to the lakeshore, all of which with his camera. With his lens, Nic tries to capture the true essence of what Michigan has to offer, whether it be though lifestyle, landscape, or portrait photography. He is currently enrolled at Lake Michigan College where he will graduate with an associates degree in Arts and plans on transferring to a four year university.

Garrett was born and raised in Grand Haven, Michigan and graduated from Calvin College with a degree in biochemistry, pre-PA. He is a travel addict and outdoor recreation junkie. He does everything from water-skiing, mono-skiing, wake surfing, and kayaking, to rock climbing, mountain biking, paragliding and more. And his passions don't stop there. Having broken his neck when he was just 15 years old, Garrett was paralyzed and bound to a wheelchair. But that hasn't stopped him from doing what he loves. In addition to just about every outdoor activity, he loves to explore and capture all the natural beauty Michigan has to offer. He shows that anyone can appreciate Michigan, no matter their situation, through sport or scenery. He's also training to be a Paralympic athlete in downhill skiing! This dude is awesome!
